Background
Two retired Wartsila-built power barges, Tiger 1 and Tiger 3 (117MWe combined) were relocated from Bangladesh to Albania to serve as temporary grid support. These assets, after two decades of service, required full reactivation following years of layup.
Opportunity
The Client required the power barges recommissioned to full operating capacity, ready to undergo a 72-hour Reliability Run at rated power before handover to the grid off-taker.
Objective
To provide Client’s Engineer and Commissioning Manager support, ensuring technical readiness, resolving degradation issues, and overseeing commissioning to meet performance requirements.
Approach
F&H reviewed condition reports, surveyed both power barges, validated contractual deliverables, and approved commissioning procedures. Technical oversight ensured testing and troubleshooting addressed corrosion, missing components, and obsolescence challenges, with parts sourced through F&H’s wider network.
Findings & Deliverables
Key issues included corroded piping, degraded equipment, and sourcing challenges for obsolete parts. Obsolescence mitigation and rapid response were vital to avoid delays.
Benefits to the client
F&H’s expertise ensured compliance, expedited commissioning, cost savings by consolidating services, and successful completion of the 72-hour Reliability Run for handover.
Conclusion
By overcoming significant degradation and obsolescence hurdles, F&H ensured timely, safe, and compliant recommissioning of the power barges, reinforcing its reputation in complex reactivation projects.
